What to Eat and Avoid While Breastfeeding?
"You must not eat legumes while breastfeeding." "Avoid sparkling drinks while breastfeeding." "Do not drink coffee if you are breastfeeding." And many more. These tips may be well-intentioned, but they often do more harm than good. So what can and cannot you really consume if you are breastfeeding your baby? It is important that the diet of a breastfeeding woman is primarily varied and nutritious. If this is not the case, nature will take responsibility for the baby's development. It will start taking the necessary substances that ensure the nutritional value of the milk directly from the mother's body. The mother may then face various health complications due to a lack of vitamins, minerals, and other substances.

Can I eat anything while breastfeeding?

To better understand the context, it's good to know that breast milk is formed from blood. Therefore, after childbirth, you really don't need to restrict yourself in any way or follow special diets. Do not change your eating habits preventively, only if a problem arises. Babies' intestines continue to develop for three months after birth. They are getting used to a new environment, bacteria, milk, and much more. Before the intestines get used to it, minor stomach aches may commonly occur. But this can be managed.

When the baby has a bad tummy ache

Diet is not the first aid. Try the following tips. - First, you can try the elimination communication method, which supports natural elimination and thus helps relieve pain. Take off the baby's diaper, hold them under the knees in a curled position, lean their back against your chest so that the baby's face is facing away from you. In this way, you can hold the baby over a bowl, bucket, or sink and wait for them to empty their bowels. - Breastfeed the baby on demand. Their intestinal peristalsis works best during breastfeeding. Frequent and long breastfeeding supports bowel function, relieves the baby's pain, and most importantly, gives the baby a feeling of safety and calm. - Carry the baby in a wrap or an ergonomic carrier. - Warm the baby's tummy, exercise with them, massage them. - If none of this helps, or if mucus or bloody streaks even appear in the baby's stool, it is advisable to focus on their diet. Most often, babies react to cow's milk protein. Then it is necessary to eliminate all milk-containing products. It can take several weeks for a dietary change to show results, as traces of this protein can persist in the mother's blood for a longer period. - Soy, eggs, tomatoes, or beef can also cause problems, but there are, of course, more problematic foods. If your baby has tummy troubles, monitor your own diet in relation to their condition and look for what might be the cause. If you are unsure, you can try an elimination diet.
Just like adults, babies can also be sensitive in different ways. And this also applies to coffee. Most babies have no problem when their mother drinks coffee while breastfeeding. However, it might bother others. Again, the rule is: observe your baby and their reactions, and if it seems that coffee in your diet doesn't suit them, then omit it.
