Rinse the rice well (about 5 times) and soak it in water overnight (at least 4 hours). Drain the water through a sieve and shake off the excess water from the rice. Handle the soaked rice gently, as it is very delicate. Then place the rice in a permeable cloth and wrap it. Steam it under a lid in a steamer for about 30 minutes.
Start making the syrup by mixing salt, sugar, and coconut milk - make sure you have this ready before the rice is steamed. After steaming the rice, it is good to mix the syrup and rice as soon as possible. Both ingredients should be warm when mixing.
Once the rice is done, carefully mix the rice and syrup in a bowl and let it rest for 20 minutes.
