INGREDIENTS
- 3 medium-sized potatoes (ideally cooking type B or C)
- 1/2 small onion, finely chopped (optional)
- 1 egg (optional, for better consistency)
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour (optional, for better consistency)
- Salt
- Pepper
- Oil for frying (e.g., sunflower or rapeseed)
INSTRUCTIONS
- 1Peel the potatoes and grate them on a coarse grater. Place the grated potatoes in a clean cloth or paper towel and squeeze thoroughly to remove as much excess liquid as possible. This will ensure the hash browns are crispy.
- 2In a bowl, mix the grated potatoes with the onion (if using). For better consistency, add the egg and flour. If you prefer a simpler version, you can omit the egg and flour. Season the mixture with salt and pepper to taste.
- 3Heat a sufficient amount of oil in a pan over medium-high heat. Form small patties from the mixture (about 2-3 tablespoons of mixture per patty). Place the patties in the hot oil and fry for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy.
- 4Drain the finished hash browns on a paper towel to remove excess oil. Serve them hot as a breakfast side dish or on their own with your favorite sauces.
Tip
If you want to make hash browns healthier, you can bake them in the oven on baking paper at 200°C for about 20-25 minutes instead of frying.
