INGREDIENTS

  • 1/2 small onion, finely chopped (optional)
  • 1 egg (optional, for better cohesion)
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour (optional, for better cohesion)
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Oil for frying (e.g., sunflower or canola)
  • 3 medium-sized potatoes (ideally type B or C)

INSTRUCTIONS

  • 1
Peel the potatoes and grate them on a coarse grater. Place the grated potatoes in a clean cloth or paper towel and squeeze thoroughly to remove as much excess liquid as possible. This will ensure that the hash browns are crispy.
  • 2
In a bowl, mix the grated potatoes with the onion (if using). For better cohesion, add the egg and flour. If you prefer a simpler version, you can omit the egg and flour. Season the mixture with salt and pepper to taste.
  • 3
Heat a sufficient amount of oil in a pan over medium-high heat. Shape the mixture into small patties (about 2-3 tablespoons of mixture per patty). Place the patties in the heated oil and fry for 3-4 minutes on each side until they are golden and crispy.
  • 4
Let the finished hash browns drain on a paper towel to remove excess oil. Serve them hot as a side dish for breakfast or on their own with your favorite sauces.
Tip
If you want to make the hash browns healthier, you can bake them in the oven on baking paper at 200°C for about 20-25 minutes instead of frying.
