Preparation method

Cut the onion lengthwise in half, then slice it crosswise into fine strips. Roughly chop the capers.

In a pan over medium heat, warm the olive oil, add the onion, and sauté slowly for 20 minutes until golden, stirring frequently. While sautéing, scrape the onion from the sides of the pan to prevent burning.

Stir 1 level teaspoon of salt and a pinch of cayenne pepper into the cooked onion and drain in a colander. Then stir in the roughly chopped capers and chopped basil.
